(actually, that doesnt pertain to either of us, but its only going to happen once for both of us together, so let us enjoy that, dammit!) we have some ideas that we have already tossed around a bit, and we will share those once we make a couple of decisions.

for those of you that are just now finding out about this and want to share this with other people, i want to ask a favor.... please dont tell them. instead, forward a link to my blog, so that they can read about it and maybe come back here a little more often....yes, its a shameless attempt at increasing my readership, but honestly, im know longer satisfied with the 5 readers that i have which venture this way once a month or so....

anyway, go forth and be happy. we will be.

-b

good

there appears to be some dissent in the rank and file.....a new posting is being demanded. well, who am i to deny the people? here you go, commoners! this one is for you.

there is a circle of individuals that i am affiliated with (by association only, trust me) that have begun a happy hour league. yes, it is pretty much what it sounds like, and i have to say i was a bit skeptical at first...i mean, come on, havent we all moved on from our mid-20s when we spent every friday night (and some thursdays) in the local bar drinking ourselves into sociable people? (ok, yeah i know, im not one to talk since i just found my drink of choice not 4 years ago, but cut me some slack, i was "socially challenged".) actually, i think the answer to my original question is, no. apparently, there is a younger crowd that i am (again) loosely affiliated with now (of course some are more loose than others..., but i digress).

the basic premise of the league is that every friday, for happy hour they hit another bar....the twist is that they pick the bar by the letter of the alphabet....this week they are on the letter "d," and i believe they will be frequenting delaney's which is somewhere downtown. the joke that brenda has repeated to me a number of times now is that if any members go all the way through the alphabet a - z without missing a letter, they get to start over with/at AA. haha. anyway, they are taking it quite seriously...they even have punch cards, which are only valid if you appear during happy hour (no late arrivals!).

apparently, many of the original members have now taken up position within the league. there is the director of field trips, the director of rules and regulations, and a few others that i cant seem to remember in my current sleep-deprived state. not that the titles really matter...apparently people change their titles weekly.

it even looks like a santa monica chapter has started up! im so excited!!!! daniel, this might be right up your alley....anyway, check it out.

<a onblur="try type='text'>pretty mary k

i found this pretty cool website last night called world school photographs where you can search for your old yearbook photos. not only did i find my old pics from highschool, but i was even able to find my moms pics from when she was a kid...kinda scary actually. all the info you need is your school name, the city your school is/was located, the year that you went to school (+/- 3 years), and your name of course.

i really dont know how they have such a library of pics, but its kinda cool. surprised the site hasnt had more attention. enjoy

-b
dearly departed

back from vacation, and damn tired. got about 30 minutes of sleep before i had to head to work last night, and boy am i feeling it now, but i still wanted to get something down here.

quick recap, with more info to follow later....

loooonnnnnggg roadtrip. over 1000 miles to glacier ntl park...most of the drive was pretty boring. the straight way from denver takes you through plains after head-bobbing plains. when we finally got there lots of hiking and three days of backpacking ensued. cool wildlife and i hope we have some decent pics to document them.

then we headed west out of the park and stayed in whitefish, mt. nice little hic-town..and i mean that in a good way. then northwest to the corner of montana that borders with idaho and canada. i just had to see the yaak valley from rick bass's writings (if you havent read anything of his, you need to...start with winter). worth the drive. huge thunderstorms hit us in our tent that night...story to come on that later.

then we took the looooooooooonnnnnngggggeer way home through yellowstone, teton ntl park, flaming gorge rec area, and by dinosaur ntl monument (we definitely got our money's worth when it came to our new annual national parks pass). on the last day we had to take a huge detour through rocky mtn natl park in order to avoid what appeared to be some truly epic traffic heading up interstate 40 by winter park and over berthoud pass. needless to say, it made for a long final day and we didnt get back quite as early as we had hoped. oh well, i still dont really understand why you would want to come back early from your vacation anyway.

-b

a few things i learned on our trip

Brenda plays a mean air guitar to van morrison

the folks in montana are actually way more friendly than i expected

you may think of montana as a mountainous state, but its really about 85 percent boring plains

the two highest peaks in wyoming are in the wind river range

bozeman, mt is a pretty darn cool town....

....butte, mt type='text'>shape of the fear

i entered the wonderful world of the ipod nearing 12 months ago now. i thought i was going to be listening to music 24-7 after i got it. things didnt really turn out as i had planned....instead i find myself listening to podcast after podcast.

it all started with npr's fresh air. margot and liz used to listen to it all the time, and frankly it just annoyed the shit out of me...i think i was really transferring amy goodman to the show really...shes the one i cant stand. liberal, yes, but condescending as all hell. anyway, i digress. i found fresh air on itunes one day, downloaded a couple episodes, and got hooked. that was 9 months ago, and i havent missed an episode yet.

then there are the music podcasts: all song's considered (another npr show), indiefeed - both the alternative channel and the indiepop channel, dallas does indie, noise-pop, bands under the radar, and the kill rock stars video podcast. i highly reccomend all of them. some are frequent, some are very rare, and they range in length from 1 song to 2 hours long. if you are looking for something new in the indie world, these are all a great place to start.

and now, ive gotten into the environmental podcasts....grist, the sierra club, and various environmental video podcasts.

plus with me being the 'slightly' obsessive individual that i am, i am forced to listen to every single episode, whether im really enjoying it or not. ive got a problem, yes, i know.

-b

ps. btw, we are off to glacier ntl park tomorrow. back with many pics i hope. we will see if i ever get around to posting some.
dont break

oh, the big no, no. the drunken blogging.....

just finished the dj night...sorta. im still going , but everyone else has crashed. daniel was chatting with us along the way, but hes off to hang out with sarah for the night. denice and robert have both called it quits a few songs ago. brenda is crashed out on the spare bed next to me, but she hasnt really added a song in at least an hour. so that leaves me...still pluggin' away listening to the music that i want to hear.

just finished playing september 67 and now im on to playing a song by lois. not really sure when it might end since ive got at least another two songs qued up. who really cares at this point...its all about the music really.

quite surprisingly, we never played any low together, so i jumped in and threw one out there as soon as everyone else called it quits, and to tell you the truth i can see another couple going in pretty quick.

now, we are on to a song from the movie once, that we went to see yesterday. great film. low budget, filmed great, acted solid, and incredible music. see it.

off to enjoy, what i want to hear....i will try to post a playlist soon.

-b
revived

dj night cometh...finally.

the last posting turned into some solobastardized dj afternoon thing. tons of music and videos and music from youtube....good times, but still not what i have been truly craving.

last weekend was FIBArk again. this has turned into a nice little tradition really. ive been out here 4 years and been to the festival each year...and i really love it. not only is there the opportunity to paddle again, but the town of salida which hosts the festival is just a blast. we had a really nice thunderstorm move through saturday evening and postpone a bunch of the events, but that made it just that much more interesting. we ended up staying the entire afternoon on sunday to watch the freestyle finals. got some great pics...but mostly of the amateur men division. heres one that<a onblur="try /> demonstrates some of their crazy abilities - 13 year old dane jackson throwing a loop (a front flip) in the play hole in salida. his ride was the most amazing ive ever seen and immediately following it, was called the best ride ever at FIBArk.

my paddle day on friday went well too. first time down brown's canyon. absolutely beautiful, and i nailed just about all of it. cant wait to run it again so i can take some more aggressive lines and challenge myself a bit more. if you check this post soon after it goes up, you might be able to catch some pics of me on the web. try this link...and if it doesnt work go to whitewaterphotography.com, click on the arkansas river tab, put in the date 6-15-07, and go to the private rafters/kayakers section. on page 8, youll find me after rob, then scott. im the one who looks scared shitless in the red boat. there is also another site you can check out here...or go to viewmyimages.com, click on the view and order link, go to private boaters, brown canyon (its really brown's canyon), click on the link for 6-15-07 between 330 and 430, and you should find me on the second page...again sweating it out hoping that i make it through the rapid. this was zoom flume, the most difficult rapid on the run...and a big kick.

till later...post dj night probably.

-b<span style="font-weight: type='text'>overshadowed

in the past (quite a ways in the past now), ive posted a haiku now and then, and every once in a while someone would post a reply with one as well. well, i thought it would be a good idea to have some kind of a post that was a free forum for haiku postings - kind of a fun way to communicate important things (or not so important things) that are important to you right now. this is going to be that attempt. so feel free to leave haikus and comments on everyone's haikus in the comments and we will see what we can come up with here. For those that need a reminder here's the standard formula for a haiku:

5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables<br there is some natural theme incorporated into the poem, but thats not really a requirement in my book; just something to consider.

Ill get things started with a couple...

snow is melting fast
water flows from mountain peaks
kayaking is fun
some beginner's mind

im here, really i am. just about to wrap up an ugly stretch working 12 days straight. i love the little friday! i really dont know how people do this at the brewery all summer long. i miss just one weekend, and ive been drinking for the last four days straight just to relax to a decent place once i get home.
<br the other day that its getting close to time for another dj night with the frousins. i was on the way to work the other day and decided to listen to the playlist of my last session, which was an unplanned one i had with denice one friday morning that extended into the evening. post hardcore galore. my favorite post-dj session list to play. missing the release that music provides. ive been on the prowl for another good show to go to, but i just havent seen anything to go to...im starting to feel out of touch from the current indie-scene, despite my efforts. i hear the "o" word knockin....

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" a picture of this while we were in christ church, during our first day on the south island. i didnt see the same humor in it at the time, but now, all i can think of is seeing someone actually do that. really, its the perfect endo. the guy is going to break both of his wrists, for sure. all its missing is a silhouette of an oncoming tram behind the rider. classic.

bought a couple of new discs a couple of weekends ago. the new low called drums and guns...and the new ted leo and the pharmacists called living with the living. unfortunately, the low is really not that good. bordering on sucky. makes me sad just thinking about it as it brings me back to the last time i saw them, a year or so ago here in denver. zach had already left the band, and they had a new bass player with them. plus this was after alan's second recovery from some sort of mental disorder. everything was different and everything was wrong. alan seemed off. way off. he was clearly on some sort of medication; he had little facial ticks that were new and he seemed disconnected from the crowd and just a little too lost in the music, and every time i noticed mimi looking over at him there was this deep concern in her eyes as if she was wondering if they were doing the right thing by playing. so sad. brought tears to my eyes a number of times. i still remember the first time i saw them way back in '95 at the original 930 club in dc; there were about 7 of us on the floor, and it felt like the beginning of something good. at this point, low is now the band that ive followed longer than any other band, and have given me the best show that ive ever experienced. but at this last show it felt like i was losing a good friend. it felt like i had to say goodbye, and i did. and now with their most recent album, it seems like they are saying goodbye in return.

following that sad note, if you are into ted leo, you will enjoy this album. after my first listen, i wasnt completely sold. the production is a little crisper, and im really not into some of the instruments theyve put in, but it continues to grow and grow on me. his voice may not have the same range that it did back in the <a and more scathingly political as he ages. get it.

<a onblur="try type='text'>here comes sickness

i know that ive said this a number of times now, but i really miss going to see shows. the problem is that i dont miss it until im out listening to the tunes. again...gotta do it more often.

and of course this post all starts from going to a show last friday, and of course, enjoying myself just enough to want to go back for more. anyway, i convinced brenda to go with me to the larimer lounge to see a band that i had heard about through one of my indiefeed podcasts that i subscribe to (which, btw, i highly recommend if you are interested in finding new music in the indie/alternative/electronica realms). i wanted to see snowden, but as usual, i insisted on seeing the opening bands as well, which was for the better really .

we walked in while everything absent or distorted was already playing. they are a local band with, i dont know, seven or eight members, who were constantly switching instruments and places on stage between songs (up to 3 guitars at a time along with hand clappers and even a trombone). it really got difficult to figure out who was doing what, so i just gave up and tried focusing on the music. at first i wasnt really all that impressed...another big collective band trying to do something cool, but then i found myself getting lost in some really nice pop-hooks. with big collectives ive found that its easier for me to enjoy them if i focus on some one piece that i like and then branch out from there. not the case with eaod. the secret with this band was their balance of the large number of participants involved in each song and keeping each member at just the right distance from overwhelming the hook of the song. now not every song was worth loosing yourself in, but there were certainly some gems. really not sure if they pull it all off on a studio recording, but live, they have certainly figured out how to juggle it all.

next up was malajube. four painfully skinny french-canadien boys from montreal. again, i wasnt impressed to begin with, but then i realized that they actually had something. unfortunately, i wasnt able to come up with a single band to compare them to, which for me is fairly amazing (cursive, maybe, but thats a bit of a stretch). there was just something about them which i really enjoyed...maybe it was just the right amount of sarcasm that they used when they were speaking to the crowd with those exaggerated french accents (were they making fun of us or was it just me?) or maybe it was just the fact that they could flat out play together.

finally came snowden. i first heard their song, between the rent and me, on indiefeed and was intrigued enough to use them to get us out to see some music. unfortunately, they were the least compelling band of the night. they are just another one of those bands that are using the 'retro' 80s thing thats all the rage with the pseudo-indie/alternative kids right now. the problem with snowden is that they just really arent that great of a band. i really didnt hear anything very original at all. my first instinct was to label them as a minus the bear/the killers hybrid, but then i realized they did have just a touch of explosions in the sky, but that didnt even come close to saving them for me. their performance was far too much contrived drama for me to take seriously, and musically none of the members stood out as having any standout talent. i tried to find some redeeming quality that would keep me interested until the next song (just in case they were saving their best for next), but all i could come up with was how the drummer filled so much of his sound with the base drum. once i realized that was the best i could come up with, i knew i was done. i enjoyed 'between the rent and me' when they played it live, and i still enjoy hearing it, but not enough to make any effort to go and see them again.

i recently discovered that sebadoh is back together and touring, so this saturday i get to see them for the 3rd time in 14 years. that in itself is frightening. i think it was 1993 when i first saw them on the 2nd stage at the 3rd lollapalooza. back then they were dubbed as one of the loudest live acts around. 7 years later i saw them at bimbo's in sf, and now, another 7 years later, they are back together. im really not sure what drummer they will have with them, but sebadoh has never been about the drummer.

-b
<img width='1' height='1' turning point for the weather....we had our first rain of the year. not that big a deal for some people, but that means that it wasnt very cold. we are over the hump and moving towards warmer weather. the kayaking i was hoping for last week didnt happen, but maybe this weekend! highs in the 60s and 70s all week and the water is already running at 70 cfs (100 is pretty much the minimum type='text'>theme for a pharmacist

the weather has finally taken a turn for the warmer (better), the snow thats been on the ground since december 20th is finally just about gone, and the water is beginning to run. crazy how i moved out here to snowboard as much as i can, and now i cant wait for the snow to melt so that i can start kayaking. realistically, its still a bit early to be getting in the water, but im so anxious to give it a try im looking for any sign of warm(ish) weather. . . this sunday they are saying that it might get into the 60s, and if it stays in the 50s up until then, we might actually get enough runoff to actually paddle in down at the golden playpark. playing it by ear, and crossing my fingers...

arcade fire

so, i finally decided to move the blog. there wasnt really one particular reason, but a few things pushed me to look for a new host. first, i got sick of looking at the ads. dont like em, dont believe in em. plus, i didnt like how my blog was so closely linked with my friendster profile. i tried a quick look at myspace, but their blog appeared to be a bit limiting and then there is just the whole myspace thing which im not sure i really want to get into. so, this is where i find myself, and so far, it seems like its going to work for me.

if you catch this post alone, come back in the future. im still trying to figure things out, and ill give you more at a later time.

if you got here without any knowledge of my past site, you can sicken yourself completely by reading all of my pointless rants at my previous host for mindless drivel.

back soon.

-b
<img width='1' height='1'
